Java allows developers to 'write once, run anywhere'. It offers a robust and stable solution to the problem of incompatible computer systems.

No programming language has gathered so many adherents in such a short space of time.

The popularity and wide support that Java enjoys ensures that whatever Microsoft might do to kill it off, it's here for the forseeable future.

Java is a programming language from Sun Microsystems that is being rapidly adopted throughout the IT world.

This is because Java is more than just a language, it is a computing platform in itself, just as Mac, Linux and Windows are operating platforms.

Java's biggest asset is its ability to run on any computer so long as it has the JVM (Java Virtual Machine).

The JVM needs to be implemented just once on each machine, then all Java 'bytecode' can be run.

When the JVM was included with Internet Browsers such as Netscape, Java became a favourite web tool almost overnight.

Since then, it has moved into the mainstream of computer development for pragmatic reasons. Essentially, Java provides a robust way for organisations to integrate incompatible computer systems.

Java was released to the public in the summer of 1995 and its popularity has grown faster than anyone thought possible. No programming language has gathered so many adherents in such a short space of time. Because of the speed of acceptance, you sometimes hear people complaining about "Java Hype".

However, there can be no denying the fact that for many corporations who have to support multi-platform environments, Java is becoming the standard programming language.

Rather than trying to chase the moving target of ever changing operating systems (e.g. WindowsNT,Windows2000,WindowsXP), Java allows developers to 'write once, run anywhere'. This is clearly a threat to Microsoft and there have been some very public arguments between Sun and Microsoft.

Despite any strategic actions Microsoft might take to keep Java under wraps (such as the .Net initiative), the sheer number of developers now using the Sun language virtually guarantees Java will be a major player for many years to come.
