Ripping World has been involved in web development since 1996. That's pretty nearly the dawn of 'dynamic' websites.
The truth is we never intended to become developers... it just kinda happened. At least the fact that were not born and bred programmers helps us keep our perspective.
Before we knew it, we were swept up in the Internet revolution and developing web application, e-commerce, and dynamic websites for numerous companies. Many of them major City firms. We resisted the urge to become involved in the 'Dot Com' boom and subsequent bust. Instead we chose to stick with 'organic growth' rather than look for some overnight miracle. It's a policy that's put us in good stead. .
We're not a big company, in reality we're more akin to a 'wolf-pack' of designers and developers. Depending on the project we work individually with the client, or with the entire 'pack'. The aim is to be flexible, scaleable and affordable. A bit like the web apps we create
The .NET Framework provides that infrastructure. In the .NET Framework, all components can be Web services, and Web Services are just a kind of component. In effect, the .NET Framework takes the best aspects of COM (the Microsoft Component Object Model) and combines them with the best aspects of loosely-coupled computing.
It's all about the 'Big Picture'; if you can't see the wood for the trees, ambitions rapidly become project nightmares. Our job is to keep a 'perspective' so that dreams can become realities. Technology should be our slave, not our master... In the beginning there were simple web pages, devoid of any 'interactivity'. Then someone figured how to entice flat-html to interact with a basic computer script. In the few short years since that time, the world has changed dramatically and the Internet has been at the centre of that whirlwind of change. E-commerce, Dot-Boom, Dot-Bust... And now the key words on everyone's lips; 'Web Services' and 'Web Applications'. RippingWorld has been involved since the start. We've seen the technology change on an almost month by month basis. What's more, we've had to use it on countless projects. Some more successful than others... So, it's fair to say that in Internet terms, were now veterans of the game. And we know how to play it. The idea of this site is to explain and perhaps dispel some of the mythology surrounding 'web development'. Hopefully, you'll gain a valuable insight into what the excitement is all about. You might even be sufficiently encouraged to contact us about your own project (large or small!). So Stick with us, the journey's only just begun... These phrases are confusing enough, without adding the corporation hype of the 'latest technology'. Java, JSP, .Net... Where do you start without falling at the first hurdle? Web technology has moved so rapidly in the past few years, it has become virtually impossible for the layman to keep abreast of the latest developments. RippingWorld aims to maintain a view of the 'Big Picture'; without bias. A web application is a program that runs on a web server and can be used (interfaced) via a web browser. A web application may have all the functionality of 'conventionally' installed software. However, it has the flexibility and scalability that comes with being deployed over the 'web' web forms and pass it to a database scripts embedded directly in your HTML documents. If you are already familiar with scripting languages such as Microsoft VBScript you will have little trouble learning ASP. Besides adding scripts to create the presentation layer (user interface) for your application, you can build your own COM (common object module) components. You can encapsulate your application's business logic into reusable modules that you can call from a script, from another component, or from another program. This enables the separation of business logic from the presentation layer. A server-side script begins to run when a browser requests an .asp file from your Web server. Your Web server then calls ASP, which processes the requested file from top to bottom, executes any script commands, and sends a Web page to the browser. Unlike JSP which is supported by several web 'application' servers, ASP is largely Microsoft only, but integrates seamlessly with IIS (Internet Information Server). Because your scripts run on the server rather than on the client, your Web server does all the work involved in generating the HTML pages sent to browsers. Server-side scripts cannot be readily copied because only the result of the script is returned to the browser. Users cannot view the script Because it uses ActiveX controls for its components, ASP technology is basically restricted to Microsoft Windows-based platforms. Offered primarily as a feature of Microsoft IIS, ASP technology does not work easily on a broader range of Web servers because ActiveX objects are platform specific. This is in contrast to Java and Java Server Pages. Ripping World can offer development and consultancy for all web technologies. We have vast experience in all development technologies, from XML, Java and JSP to C# and .Net. Our web designers work closely with our web developers and programmers to provide full-cycle development. Since 1996 we have been designing web sites and developing web applications. Our approach to web design and development is pragmatic. Programming discipline and creative design go hand in hand with our projects. The architecture of your web application is like digging the foundations of your house. The weaker they are; the greater the chance that anything you build on top will fall down. The more you build on weak foundations, the greater the chance of catastrophic collapse. The war for dominance of the web is bloody and vicious. However, clear winners are emerging from the smoke of the battlefield. The key is seeing the truth through the confusion. The problem with setting up web architecture is that if you talk to two different developers the chances are, you'll get two different answers. There are staunch advocates of Microsoft technologies (particularly the new .Net initiative); and there are equally staunch advocates of Sun's J2EE technologies. Somewhere in-between there are fans of other technologies such as PHP and Cold Fusion. Then there is the question of hardware and databases. Microsoft IIS? Apache against Unix? Linux or even Netscape servers? Oracle, Sequel 2000, Sybase? So it goes on... The truth is, the correct technology is the one that fits your needs now and in the future. The chances are you already have some sort of IT infrastructure. You may well be running Microsoft IIS or your ISP only runs Apache against Unix. Examining your current infrastructure will give you a good indication as to which web technology is the best fit for you. The next question is how 'mission critical' is my web application? For instance, if you were developing an online shares dealing portal, then security and stability would be major considerations. In this case, you may well be somewhat concerned about relying on Microsoft technologies. Recent virus scares have highlighted security holes in some of Microsoft's products. Therefore, Java and Java Server Pages may be better suited to your needs. Multi platform support may also be an issue with Microsoft technologies. On the other hand, your web application may be less mission critical, but need to be developed quickly. You may also be looking to rapidly expand the web application in the near future. In this case, Microsoft technologies might better suit your needs. This is particularly true if you are already using IIS and development environments such as Visual Studio. Then again, you may not have much in-house development experience. Perhaps you want your graphics designers to also do the programming. In this case, Cold Fusion or even PHP may fit your needs. There is no hard or fast rule which dictates which web technology or web architecture best fits your requirement. It is necessary to take a step back, examine your current and future needs. Then examine your current infrastructure. Only after you've done this can you hope to make a balanced decision. Tip: try and make your decision based on the facts and relative merits, rather than someone's biased opinion. The architecture of your web application is like digging the foundations of your house. The weaker they are; the greater the chance that anything you build on top will fall down. The more you build on weak foundations, the greater the chance of catastrophic collapse The architecture of your web application is like digging the foundations of your house. The weaker they are; the greater the chance that anything you build on top will fall down. The more you build on weak foundations, the greater the chance of catastrophic collapse In the ideal world a framework should provide a common approach for component development. It should provide a strong set of development and deployment tools; encourage a wide range of vendors and users to participate and should build on existing practice and skills in the market to gain leverage. To succeed as the basis for web development, a framework should offer multi-platform support. The same approach should cover web applications and services. The framework should also serve all web devices - PC, Phone, PDA, IDTV and embedded devices. The developers dream list Again, in the ideal world a development environment would build on existing skills (VB, VC++, etc) and have a great IDE (Integrated development environment). It would also be stable and brimming with useful features. The approach would also serve multi-platforms as the PC ceases to be the dominant means of web access (let alone multi-browsers such as Netscape and IE). There would be well defined APIs for interoperability that would de-couple technology decisions and protect current system investments The reality is that neither J2EE nor .NET entirely fulfil the 'wish-list'. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but neither addresses all the issues. Strengths and Weaknesses Platform strengths .net Superb IDE which will accelerate client development. Multi language support. Scalability. Internet component model. J2EE Core services well covered, e.g. transactionality. Architectural blueprint. Existing knowledge pool. One language fits all. Platform Weaknesses .net Microsoft platform (Windows 2000) only. Performance. Stateless (sorry Microsoft, this is not an advantage). No application server solution. Same old DLL hell with underlying COM+ structure. J2EE Still poor IDE and client side ergonomics. Java is still a major leap for many programmers. Vendor support for client side functionality has been limited. Porting between application servers not seamless.
